After losing her 57-year-old father to multifocal glioblastoma (brain cancer), Alexandra Mazza felt utterly lost. Having no other outlet, Alexandra found herself pouring her heart into her journal, with no goal in mind other than to write through her pain. Over time, these journal entries became the poems that now comprise the fighter remains.

The poems in this collection are separated into four sections, metaphorically named: “on the ropes,” “in your corner,” “bob & weave,” and “knocked down, not out.” Each section reflects a different stage of the grieving process and healing journey. The work as a whole is heavily influenced by Alexandra’s father’s love of boxing and his unwavering philosophy of facing challenges with grace and fortitude. The book is illustrated by Alexandra’s cousin, Jacqueline Moore, and her dear friends, Carly Rae Neugebauer and Madelyn Deegan.

Alexandra’s family experienced significant financial stress due to her father’s diagnosis. In light of this, 25% of the proceeds from the sale of each book will be donated towards alleviating medical debt for families with a loved one battling glioblastoma via the non-profit organization, Gray for Glioblastoma.

Alexandra’s hope is that this book will resonate with anyone who has experienced tremendous loss and now finds themselves in a position where they must go on. This book is meant to serve as both a source of comfort and encouragement, reminding readers that they are never alone in their grieving journey, and that healing is a non-linear process that takes time and patience.

About the author

Alexandra Mazza is a 27-year-old middle school English teacher and writer who strives to live a happy and wholesome life. When she is not teaching her wonderful students, Alexandra enjoys reading, writing, posting poetry on her Instagram account @countertoplovenotes, sipping coffee from her favorite mug, and exercising. Alexandra loves going on long walks with her loving boyfriend, Jared, and their sweet puppy, Solo. Her favorite thing to do is laugh over a home-cooked meal with family and friends. In November 2023, Alexandra’s father, Paul Mazza, passed away at the age of 57 after a courageous battle with multifocal glioblastoma (brain cancer). To honor her father’s memory, Alexandra has decided to donate 25% of the proceeds from her poetry book, “the fighter remains,” to alleviate medical debt and expenses for families with a loved one battling glioblastoma. The non-profit organization, Gray for Glioblastoma, will facilitate this initiative. Alexandra firmly believes that together, we can make a positive impact and leave the world a brighter place.
