Fundamentals of Virology describes multiple viral species from each major family and compares their survival strategies. The book begins with a thorough introductory chapter explaining everything readers need to know about the basics of virology. Successive chapters are organized by major families within each Baltimore Classification, a system that classes viruses into one of seven groups. Descriptions include a comparison of viral species based on different identities, such as genome type, type of capsid structure and with or without an envelope, mode of transmission, and tropism. Structure-function relationship, cause and effect, adaptation, and persistence to exist (survival) are all covered.

Fundamentals of Virology includes topics of pressing importance today, such as strategies for vaccines and the role of clinical, governmental, and individual response during epidemics and pandemics.

About the author

Hao Nguyen is a professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at California State University, Sacramento. He received his BA in Biology from Rice University and his PhD in Molecular and Cellular Biology from the University of Texas at Dallas. His research has focused on the Rous sarcoma virus, human colon cancer, inflammation, and prostate cancer. Nguyen has taught a variety of courses, including Virology, Immunology, Cancer Biology, and Cell and Molecular Biology.
